ELIPTICA
Meet the Team
Eliptica is a TechBio company spin-out from the Francis Crick Institute in London. We come from a variety of scientific backgrounds: biochemistry, metabolism, high-throughput proteomics and applied machine learning. Our team is passionate about realising the benefits of proteomics for patients in routine clinical practice
CEO
Charles Brigden
Charles is CEO and co-founder of Eliptica. He is a senior executive and former surgeon with nearly 20 years leadership experience in the BioPharmaceutical and HealthTech industries. Most recently he was an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at the Francis Crick Institute in London where he met his co-founder colleagues, Markus and Aleksej and was an adviser to startup Biotech and HealthTech companies. Previously, he was in Corporate Business Development having completed numerous M&A and Licensing transactions in the US, EU and Emerging Markets as Head of Business Development at BTG plc and at Amgen. Earlier in his career, Charles held senior positions in R&D at Amgen supporting the successful late-stage development and commercial launch of at least five Biotech products. He holds an MBA from Columbia Business School, a postgraduate degree in Pharmaceutical Medicine (MFPM) and was a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons.
CSO
Markus Ralser
Markus is CSO and scientific co-founder of Eliptica. He is an Einstein Professor of Biochemistry and a leading scientist in the field of cellular metabolism and high-throughput mass spectrometry. Markus is currently Director and Head of the Institute of Biochemistry at the Charité in Berlin, as well as affiliated with the Nuffield Department of Medicine at the University of Oxford and the Berlin Institute of Health. Previously he was a senior Group leader at the Francis Crick Institute in London, a Group Leader at the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Cambridge, and a Junior Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics. Markus is the recipient of many notable science awards including two ERC grants (Starting grant, Synergy grant), the Wellcome Investigator Award, Wellcome Beit Prize, the BioMed Central Research Award, the Colworth Medal, the Starling Medal, and the EMBO Gold Medal.
CTO
Aleksej Zelezniak
Aleksej is CTO and scientific co-founder of Eliptica. Aleksej graduated with a PhD in Computational Biology from the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany and did a postdoc at the University of Cambridge and the Francis Crick Institute, London, studying the regulation of metabolic networks. He co-authored >40 scientific publications in bioinformatics and computational biology most notably in metabolism and gene expression regulation. Aleksej is passionate about applying machine learning technologies to our fundamental understanding of biological processes and to applied data-driven clinical proteomics.
Senior Scientist
Spyros Vernardis
Spyros is a Senior Scientist and responsible for laboratory operations at Eliptica. He has extensive experience in using mass spectrometry-based profiling for studying metabolism at both organism and cell levels. His PhD (ICEHT-FORTH, Patras) and early postdoctoral experience (Imperial College London) convinced him of the usefulness of metabolomics in cell culture engineering and stem cell bioprocessing. His postdoctoral research at The Francis Crick Institute introduced him to translational proteomics research and provided him with experience in large-scale human plasma proteomics profiling for epidemiological studies. He is passionate about the potential of large-scale, high-throughput omics data acquisition in biomedical research and precision medicine.
Senior Scientist
Luise Luckau
Luise is a Senior Scientist and is responsible for laboratory operations at Eliptica. She has extensive experience in protein analysis using mass spectrometry in the metrological field, focusing on the standardisation of biomarker quantification. Luise graduated with a PhD in Analytical Chemistry at the German Metrology Institute Physikalisch-Technische-Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig (Germany) and gained postdoctoral experience at the UK`s National Measurement Laboratory hosted by LGC in Teddington. She is interested in improving the analytical performance of proteomics approaches towards accuracy, precision and standardisation for clinical applications.
Senior Bioinformatician
Arturas Grauslys
Arturas is a Senior Bioinformatician at Eliptica and is responsible for computational workflows and data analysis. He has extensive experience in biomedical data analysis, statistical modelling and machine learning. His multidisciplinary background in medicine, bioinformatics and systems biology (University of Warwick) afforded him opportunities to work on a wide range of projects as a data scientist (University of Liverpool) and gain valuable skills working with complex datasets and problems ranging from molecular biology to clinical medicine. He is passionate about applications of advanced methods to large data analysis in order to enable actionable decision making in medical diagnostics, prognosis and treatment.
